Hi everyone! It's after the M2013 prereleases, and I have test results in from the prior month. So, I can share with you all some recommendations about becoming Level 1 judges. Keep in mind that this is just a look at some trouble spots for this past month's test results, and you can always look back at the archives for additional recommendations...

(1) Make sure that you are clear on how the combat phase works. While everyone should understand that "damage doesn't use the stack" since M2010, keep in mind that you know the actual steps in the combat phase. Furthermore, what happens in each step and who does what. These days, when there are multiple blockers for an attacker, the active player has to order blockers... That is, announce the "damage assignment order". This lets the defending player know which creature will be assigned damage first, second, etc. Damage gets assigned per that damage assignment order, with lethal damage having to be assigned to the first creature before any is assigned to the second. (Deathtouch does affect this.)

(2) Make sure that you understand the difference in how the game handles a spell's target being legal, but there being some kind of "impossible instruction", versus the spell's target being illegal. Specifically, what does "Can't be countered." mean versus something that gains protection.
When the spell has an illegal target, it is countered and doesn't resolve. But, when there is an impossible instruction (such as "Can't be
countered."), the game ignores that impossible instruction. The spell still resolves and does as much as possible.

(3) Make sure that you understand how and when triggered abilities get put onto the stack. That is, the APNAP concept for putting the active player's triggers on the stack first, then putting the nonactive player's triggers onto the stack. This matters since the stack resolves Last-in, First-out (or First-in, Last-out as you prefer), and each trigger resolves one-at-a-time. You may occassionally hear things like "The stack resolves.", and that can definitely be the source of misunderstandings.

(4) Make sure that you understand how "Common Errors" are dealt with at Friday Night Magic. If you don't know what I'm talking about, make sure to download the "Judging at Regular REL Guide." Typically for these kind of situations, we simply fix the problem and then move on. There's no penalty associated with the fix, and certainly we don't apply the infraction concept from the Magic Infraction Procedure Guide that is used at Competitive REL events. While people may remember from a PTQ that "drawing extra cards = Game Loss," this isn't true at Regular REL events. We'd put back a random card and caution the player to be more careful.

(5) Make sure that you understand how many abilities work, and how to recognize mana abilities. An activated ability is a mana ability if (a)
it could put mana into a player's mana pool as it resolves, (b) doesn't have a target, and (c) it isn't a loyalty ability. A triggered ability
can be a mana ability if it triggers on the activation of a mana ability and could put mana into a player's mana pool as it resolves. Mana
abilities don't use the stack and can't be responded to, which includes the payment of costs for that mana ability. Whether tapping or
sacrificing a creature.

...and that seems to be the most difficult things for the past month. Nothing too serious, right? So, please feel free to share this message
with your friends who may not be on this listserv, and otherwise consider testing for Level 1 if you're helping with Friday Night Magic or other
events.

I would also give a similar reminder to the one I made last month. If you do want to test, make sure to talk to a Level 2+ judge as early as
possible about testing. That way you can get specific help or feedback about the test, and discuss the things you might not be familiar with. As all Level 2+ judges can create L1 Practice exams for candidates, if you want a refresher, you can ask for one to be created by the person who'll test you. From there, you can better direct your studying or just realize that you are ready to actually test.

Si vous désirez des détails sur l'un des points abordés, n'hésitez pas à demander. Smile

Et l'analyse des examens de certification des arbitres de niveau 1, avec des conseils sur la façon de les préparer :

Welcome to August everyone, and another installment of recommendations for becoming Level 1 judges. All my previous messages on his topic are available in the listserv's archives, and these posts are meant to be public information. I can't discuss the test questions themselves, but at least I can point you in the proper direction to study and otherwise make sure you are prepared for the actual Level 1 exam.

(1) Unlike the Rules Advisor exam, the Level 1 exam includes some questions on policy. When it comes to studying the Magic Tournament Rules, you want to focus your efforts on understanding the basics for a sanctioned event. You can find these in Section 2, Section 10, and Appendix B of that document. This could be from knowing the pre-game procedures, the number of players you need, to the minimum length of rounds. That way you can make sure everything goes well for any sanctioned event you judge!

(2) Make sure that you understand how mana abilities work, and how to recognize mana abilities. An activated ability is a mana ability if (a) it could put mana into a player's mana pool as it resolves, (b) doesn't have a target, and (c) it isn't a loyalty ability. A triggered ability can be mana ability if it triggers on the activation of a mana ability and could put mana into a player's mana pool as it resolves. Mana abilities don't use the stack and can't be responded to, which includes the payment of costs for that mana ability. Whether tapping or sacrificing a creature.

(3) Two-Headed Giant is a format that can be sanctioned for Friday Night Magic, or even show up as a public event at certain Grand Prixes. So, make sure you are familiar with the basics of that format when it comes to the combat phase. There are FAQs out there on the 2HG format, so it would be good to review those basics.

(4) Make sure that you are clear on how the combat phase works. Also recognize when you can cast spells and/or activate abilities during the combat phase.

(5) Make sure that you understand how and when triggered abilities get put onto the stack. That is, the APNAP concept for putting the active player's triggers on the stack first, then putting the nonactive player's triggers onto the stack. As well as putting triggered abilities on the stack when a player would get priority after a spell or ability has resolved. This matters since the stack resolves Last-in, First-out (or First-in, Last-out as you prefer), and each spell or ability resolves one-at-a-time. You may occassionally hear things like "The stack resolves.", and that can definitely be the source of misunderstandings.

...and that seems to be the most difficult things for the past month. Again, that seems a pretty doable list of things to study and know for your Level 1 test? And do share this message with any friends you have who may be interested in testing for Level 1.

As with last month, if you want to test for Level 1, make sure to talk to a Level 2+ judge as early as possible about testing. That way you can get specific help or feedback about how to study for the test, and discuss any situations involving rules or policy that you may not be certain about. Furthermore, all Level 2+ judges can create L1 Practice exams for candidates. So, you can ask for one to be created by the person you are testing with, and that way you can get some specific ideas of what you want to study or ask your mentor about.

Welcome to another installment of recommendations for becoming a Level 1 judge. All previous messages on this topic are in the listserv's archives, and this post is just a summary based on a review of those tests generated during the month of September. This is really a set of "rolling recommendations" so some subjects change or get revisited depending on what happens.

Keep in mind that these posts are public information on the test itself, so while the questions are confidential, I can give you all some ideas on what to potentially study. Now, to those specific thoughts this time around...

(1) Have an idea of how deathtouch works in terms of the assignment of "lethal damage" and following the damage assignment order. There was a time after the Magic 2010 rules change that deathtouch let you ignore the damage assignment order process, but that is no longer true. Creatures with deathtouch do have to follow the damage assignment order set in the declare blockers step. It just takes 1 point of assigned damage to be lethal, then you can start assigning damage to the next creature in that order.

(2) Make sure that you understand the basic match structure for a sanctioned match of Magic in an event. Typically a match ends once one of the players has won at least two games, sometimes called the "best two out of three". But drawn games do not count towards the maximum number of games played, and it is possible to play a fourth game if time permits.

(3) Recognize how casting spells and/or activating abilities work, and that this process can't be interrupted. You can't respond to the payment of costs, such as sacrificing or tapping a creature. Furthermore, with mana abilities, those don't use the stack at all and you can't respond to your opponent activating such an ability. Remember that a mana ability is one that (1) could produce mana as it resolves, (2) doesn't target, and (3) isn't a loyalty ability.

(4) Understand that when a triggered ability triggers, you do have to choose a target for that ability as it is put onto the stack. If there
happens to be only a single legal target, you have to choose that target for the ability. So, a creature with protection from the ability's source won't be a legal target, but a triggered ability that triggers when a creature enters the battlefield can target the creature that just entered the battlefield.

(5) Lastly, make sure to review the Basic Rulebook and understand the steps in the combat phase. Not just by name, but also what happens in each of those steps and how various keywords could affect the combat phase. I noted deathtouch earlier, but understand how first strike or double strike have an impact on the combat phase. The Glossary of the Basic Rulebook can be very helpful in that respect.

...so, now we're caught up for the month of September. Is that everything you will need to study? No. You should review the Judging at Regular REL Guide and the Magic Tournament Rules when it comes to basic event structure and running those events. But the above list seemed to make trouble spots to definitely review and be aware of.

Again, I do want to remind everyone of the L1 Practice exam and its potential to help you prepare for the actual Level 1 exam. As a Rules
Advisor, you can create your own L1 Practice exam; while it has a two-month cooldown, you definitely should use it when available. Furthermore, all Level 2+ judges have the ability to create L1 Practice exams, so if you think you need to take one prior to taking the actual Level 1 exam, definitely mention that to the person who'll test you.

Good luck and happy judging!

Et en août :

Hello everyone! I wanted to provide another installment of recommendations for becoming a Level 1 judge. There are previous messages on this topic in the listserv's archives, and these posts are meant as the "public" information on the exam itself. Test questions are
confidential, but with these recommendations, it should give you a good idea of what to study to prepare for the actual Level 1 exam.

So, some specific thoughts for the month...

(1) Make sure that you understand how the miracle keyword ability works. There's two parts to the keyword, one that modifies what happens when you would draw the card, which is a replacement effect generated by a static ability. The other part is a triggered ability that triggers when you reveal the card while drawing it. Keep in mind that the triggered ability uses the stack and can be responded to, and the miracle isn't cast until that trigger resolves. So, make sure to review the Avacyn Restored FAQ on the miracle ability.

(2) Make sure to understand the difference between Regular REL and Competitive REL. At Regular REL, your general approach should be "Investigate and ensure that the error was accidental, fix the error as you are best able (or leave as-is if you can't), and educate the player
(s)." Game losses, while penalties at Competitive REL, are generally reserved for repeated errors after you've specifically reminded the player
at Regular REL. Simply put, we don't have infractions at Friday Night Magic; we investigate, fix the situation, and educate. Review the Judging at Regular REL Guide for more information on this.

(3) Make sure that you understand that regeneration is not the same thing as damage prevention. A regenerated creature was dealt damage, important for things like lifelink or certain triggered abilities, and while the marked damage is removed when the regeneration shield is applied certain cards may look for a "creature dealt damage". Also keep in mind that regeneration replaces the creature's destruction, so it doesn dies and won't leave the battlefield.

(4) Make sure that any lost games in a match are reported, even if one player concedes to the other. And that asking for a concession is
entirely legal, provided no incentive is being offered. So, if it happens to be game three and time is about to expire and it would be a draw,
asking for a concession is okay. Don't roll a die/flip a coin! (And you can educate your players on this by posting signs at your local shop.)

(5) Be familiar with the names of the steps and phases in the turn, as well as the turn structure itself. Knowing what you can do at certain
points in the turn, when you can do those things, when mana pools empty, etc. are very important things to know. Especially when you have to explain those concepts to a new player. When is my last opportunity to tap a potential attacker? What happens in my end step? When does damage wear off? All are good basic things you need to know as a judge.

...so, that's it for another month. Some of you may find those easy concepts and you know them already. If so, study some other areas. If
not, then make sure to review the Basic Rulebook and/or other documents. Try some Easy Practice or Hard Practice exams to brush up!

I also want to remind everyone of the value of the L1 Practice exam to study and prepare for the actual Level 1 exam. As a Rules Advisor, you should be able to create your own, so do use that. Furthermore, if you talk to a Level 2+ judge early about testing, you can also ask that judge to create an L1 Practice exam for you. All Level 2+ judges have that permission to create L1 Practice exams, which can serve as a valuable diagnostic tool to make sure a candidate is ready.

Good luck!
