POSITION: Designer, Magic: The Gathering

TEAM: Magic R & D

REPORTS TO: Magic Development Manager

POSITION PURPOSE

Develop upcoming Magic sets through participation in development teams—with an eye toward leading such teams—and extensive playtesting.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS

Vice President of R & D, Director of Magic R & D, Magic R&D Producer, other developers, designers, editors, and creative team members. Occasionally other departments/projects will require R & D input, and this position may be assigned to those tasks.

JOB DUTIES

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:

- Participate in Magic development teams, with the possibility of leading such teams in the future.

- Playtesting the upcoming Standard, Block Constructed, Extended and Limited environments.

- Participate in other R&D activities such as collation, templating, leagues, etc., as assigned.

- Analysis of cards/card sets.

- Preconstructed deck design.

- Information support to marketing, periodicals, and organized play.

- Other miscellaneous job duties as assigned.

Secondary Functions:

- Participate in Magic design teams according to the desires of the employee and the needs of the Magic Design Manager.

- Playtest other games/products as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Applicants need to be capable of building Pro Tour caliber constructed decks without any supervision or specific directions.

- Applicants need to be able to build competitive sealed decks and to booster draft well, also without supervision or specific instructions.

- The developer must be capable of working with other members of R & D to adjust both the power level and fun level of Magic cards and card sets based on their own playtesting efforts and the efforts of others.

Education and Training:

Bachelors Degree with training in analytical thinking (Engineering, sciences, math or philosophy) is required.

Prior Related Experience:

- Extensive experience with Magic tournaments required.

- Development experience as a Wizards intern or development experience within another game company preferred.

- Pro Tour experience highly desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Extensive knowledge of Magic rules, cards, decks, and strategies.

- Ability to provide constructive feedback based upon logical reasoning.

- Ability to manage small teams and hand off work by specific deadlines a plus.

We are looking for Game Designers! Your job will be to make games. You come with the ideas, and then develop the game, from concept to final rules. Along the way you will have to make the game real by designing pieces and components, by coming up with game mechanics, by playtesting (again and gain), and by making it all fit in the box on time and on budget!
