As you probably already noticed, a few changes have been made to the OPC last October.
The first big change is that the OPC is now a dynamic system. We have shed the constraints of seasons entirely and now present your points as the total result of your best 16 tournaments over the past 6 months. There are a few reasons for this. First and foremost, it allows us to award prizes in a much more dynamic way without having to carry over parts of our level structure between seasons. As it is now, you will simply receive benefits and prizes based on your current level, making things easier for both players and organizers.
Another reason for this is that it will allow players to jump right into the ranking at any point in time and be able to compete. With the previous system, there was little or no incentive to play if you started Magic mid-season, or went on hiatus for a couple of months.
The new system promotes competition a bit more by only counting your best results. This means that the necessity for endless grinding is diminished somewhat and players - while they will still score better if they play more - will be rewarded for consistently performing well.
A direct result from this is that we have lowered the level barriers. The lower levels are now within reach for most players and serve as a reward for your loyalty in the form of tournament coupons. The higher levels will be harder to reach, but now mostly reward you with benefits that we hope will be interesting for the more competitive players.
The second (smaller) change is in how we award points. Our previous system was based solely on the attendance of the tournament and your position in it. This was unfair for Draft/FNM events where you had 3 or more draft pods but the winners of pods 2 and 3 would get less points than the winner of the first pod, depending solely on resistance - a factor completely outside the control of the player. Therefore, we now grant points for pure swiss based entirely on your swiss points. For playoff tournaments, we still hold on to prizes dependant on position.
A quick visit to our OPC pages will tell you that you can now see the OPC points awarded in each tournament result page, at the end of the table. In addition, you can click on a player's name in the OPC Points list to see what tournaments he played in and how he did, as well as which tournaments count towards his total. Tournaments counting towards your ranking are presented in blue, with the blue getting deeper as the tournament is closer to expiration. Tournaments in grey are those that do not count toward your total. When a tournament expires (because it is older than 6 months), your next best tournament will start counting.
We will award prizes at the end of every quarter, based on your ranking at that moment. In addition, each week we will be handing out free coupons and other goodies to random people that have reached at least level 1. For the high level players we have free participations and byes to our Outpost Open Weekends. Keep an eye out for it, because one of these events is Coming Soon !
OPC Explained
THE OUTPOST PLAYERS CLUB
1) Explanation
The Outpost Player's Club is evolving. The system we created a few months ago is going to go through a few changes that will hopefully make it more interesting to the players as well as solve a few of its minor issues.
The first big change is that we will be changing the OPC to a permanent ranking system. This means that at any point in time, your ranking will change according to your performance. Your ranking will be the sum of the points of your best sixteen tournaments of the past six months. We will reward prizes for the ranking at set points in time, on dates yet to be announced, as well as over the course of the year.
This way, players are no longer constrained by seasons or periods in which it is either interesting or irrelevant to play tournaments. Instead, you will always benefit from playing at Outpost. In addition to that, counting only your best results means that while it's always better to play more tournaments, you will be able to compete for the top levels even if you don't play Magic three days a week.
New players will see their ranking go up quickly, while players improving their results will also immediately notice a difference in their level (and the accompagnying rewards).
To correct for the lower point totals the top players will reach, we will be lowering the points needed to reach each level.
The new ranking will feature some small adjustments to the awarded points for each tournament to solve some discrepancies that arose. In the future, we will be awarding points based directly on the number of swiss rounds played. This mostly corresponds with the number of players, except in the case of a Friday Night Magic tournament.
For a straight swiss tournament, you will be receiving points based directly on the number of points you have scored (See below), while in a tournament with playoffs it will be your final standings that determine the amount of points you are awarded. It made little sense to "punish" players for being in a different draft pod at FNM's, simply because the resistance of another pod was higher, an issue corrected with this new method of counting.
For Friday Night Magic specifically, we will be capping the amount of points per tournament to a maximum of 3. This way, drafters and constructed players are left on equal footing and they can choose which tournament they play solely on preference (An FNM standard tournament can occasionally have 4 rounds, compared to 3 for drafts).
You will be able to find information about your tournament results and your rating on our website soon. A detailed report of all your tournaments and the points they grant will be coming a bit later.
2) Level barriers

3) Prizes
a) The Outpost Raffle
Each week we will hold a lottery that all players of level 1 or higher automatically qualify for. The winner will receive an extra prize that he or she can pick up in his local Outpost shop ! We will be announcing who wins what each week on our website, so keep an eye out !
b) Continuous benefits
Achieving a level will grant you some prizes that you will get when you play in an Outpost Open. For those prizes, the rating you have on the day of the Outpost Open is used.
c) Quarterly prizes
At the end of each quarter you will be given prizes depending on the level you have at that point.
The rewards on each level are cumulative, so at level 4 you will get a Constructed and a Draft coupon, at level 6 you will get 2 of each.
4) Point division
Each tournament will grant some points for participation and additional points for achieving good results. How many points can be won from a tournament, depends on how many rounds* (see below) are played in it. Friday Night Magic tournaments can award a maximum of 3 points + 1 participation point.
a) Straight swiss tournaments
These tournaments have no playoffs, and therefore the results are directly tied to the points you score in the tournament. A player winning all his matches will receive points equal to the number of rounds (let us call this number X). After this, points are reduced for each loss or draw you have, granting 1 less point for each tier lower you end on. More concrete, this means that your points will be divided according to this scheme:
Tournament result Tournament points OPC Points Example FNM (3 rounds) Example Prerelease (5 rounds)
X-0-0 3*X X 3-0-0 = 3 pts 5-0-0 = 5 pts
(X-1)-0-1 3*(X-1)+1 X-1 2-0-1 = 2 pts 4-0-1 = 4 pts
(X-1)-1-0 3*(X-1) X-2 2-1-0 = 1 pts 4-1-0 = 3 pts
(X-2)-0-2 OR 3*(X-2)+2 X-3 1-0-2 = 0 pts 3-0-2 = 2 pts
(X-2)-1-1 3*(X-2)+1 X-3 1-1-1 = 0 pts 3-1-1 = 2 pts
b) Playoff tournaments
These tournaments are usually much more competitive in nature. As such, the positioning in the end ranking is much more relevant than the points you scored (sometimes done for tactical reasons). The amount of points is still based on the number of rounds played (Let us call this X again), but points for playoff tournaments are divided as follows, directly linked to your end result:
Tournament result OPC Points   Example GPT (5 rounds) Example PTQ (8 rounds)
Winner X 5 8
Runner up X-1 4 7
3rd/4th place X-2 3 6
5th-8th place X-3 2 5
9th-16th place X-4 1 4
17th-32nd place X-6 0 2
c) Participation bonus
Tournaments have the following participation points associated with them:
- Friday Night Magic, Weekly Draft, Regular (weekly/monthly) tournaments, Prerelease, Release events all award 1 Participation Point.
- GPT's, PTQ's, Large tournaments (usually involving playoffs), Gamedays all award 2 Participation Points.
- Outpost Open tournaments grant 1 additional bonus point on top of this !
* It should be noted that points are based on the amount of rounds that should be played for a tournament for that amount of players. Playing additional rounds (such as playing 5 rounds in a 12-person GPT with a top 4 cut) will not increase your points.
d) Team events
At this point, team events do not count towards the ranking.
