I had the good fortune to catch up with Garvas Elscott, Magic Online enforcement officer, between rounds at Pro Tour Paris, about his views on making the most of the weapons available to him playing in Standard with Mirrodin Besieged.
When it comes to law enforcement, Garvas' weapon of choice is a sword.
"Sure, if you want to axe me some questions I can be of service. I'll tell you everything you need to know. I can go into sworded detail on each and every 'quip in this format."
"I don't think that anybody minds Sword of Body and Mind. It was good, but the feats you can pull of with Sword of Feast and Famine are just better. The abilities of Sword of Feast and Famine work very well for control decks like blue/white in the format. Being able to equip, swing and untap all your lands means that holding counterspell mana up is easy, and making them discard that card left in their hand is kind of a bonus."
"Stoneforge Mystic is really what makes a lot of the equipment in the format right now work, and most of the time sword of FaF is what I want to be fetching. I'm not normally into forgery, but there's no faking how good it is when you play your sword at a discount at the end of turn, and then equip and swing."
"Both swords provide protection from green, but the protection from black of Sword of Feast and Famine keeps your creatures' throats safe if someone wants to go for them, and means that all those Vampire Nighthawks and Grave Titans are not going to be doing much blocking."
"Sword of Body and Mind is still good for value. Once you have one sword, if you are going to fetch a second, it's better to collect a full set than to double up. The milling ability can be relevant against Valakut, where after a couple of mills they might be short on hills for their kills, and in other matchups the protection from blue is good against Jace and such."
"In some matchups, swords aren't even necessary. Against aggro, sometimes you need to just get a Lifestaff, of the Sylvok variety, suit up and start swinging. A Squadron Hawk with Sylvok Lifestaff is big game."
At this point it became clear that Garvas perspective was getting a little skewed (how big can a hawk ever be?), so we cut our interview short. For more pearls from Garvas Elscott, keep a stern watch. That’s what he’s doing over you.
